Hello, Friends!
I am still full of feelings after our dear friend Cliona was released from detention – gratitude for the vast network of love, support, and justice that emerged, despair that this happened at all, and determination to find ways to support people who continue to find themselves in detention.
This experience made a system that was largely invisible to me, painfully visible. If you’re looking for ways to support others in detention, I want to connect you with Advocates for Immigrants in Detention North West (AIDNW). This is an organization that supports immigrants in detention and upon release through various volunteer programs.
You can volunteer with them in a number of ways:
-
Pen-Pal Program – Write to inmates in detention with messages of solidarity and support.
-
Books, Puzzles, and Care Packages – This organization has found a way to get these kinds of items to detainees as well as bags of items offered to immigrants who face deportation.
-
Donate to Phone Funds for Detainees – It was news to me that phone calls are not free for detainees. This program works to fund phone calls for people who need them.
You can learn more about ways to get involved and donate with AIDNW here. May we continue to build hope, connection, justice, and love for all our neighbors.
In love,
